When Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, guests were excited. But, they were more excited about the new ride, Star Wars Rise of the Resistance, which didn’t open right away. The rumors about the attraction absolutely made it seem like a must-ride.
Now that Rise of the Resistance has been open for some time, I’ve had the opportunity to ride it. Although I’m not a huge Star Wars fan, I can still admit that this is one of the best attractions I’ve experienced. It includes audio-animatronics, a dark ride, motion simulators, and walkthroughs.
Star Wars Rise of the Resistance is unlike anything you will have seen. As a result, it’s become extremely popular. This immersive experience is definitely a must-ride for any theme park and/or Star Wars fan.
Of course, as you’d expect, getting to experience this attraction with little to no wait involves a bit of advance planning. You’ll need to get a Rise of the Resistance boarding group assignment before heading to the ride. Read on to learn more about how to ride Rise of the Resistance at Walt Disney World (and Disneyland, when it reopens).

Getting Your Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group and Riding the Attraction
About Rise of the Resistance at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
When Rise of the Resistance was first announced, everyone knew that it would be a unique and popular attraction. Even the description made it sound like nothing else in the theme parks. When both Galaxy’s Edge lands opened, this ride wasn’t quite ready, so Star Wars fans had to wait a bit longer.
However, both opened during phase two and were of course, immediately popular. Rise of the Resistance is located in Galaxy’s Edge in both parks. In Walt Disney World, you’ll find it at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and at Disneyland, you’ll find it at Disneyland Park.
While initially, a reservation system was set up for access to Galaxy’s Edge, that was soon deemed unnecessary. However, even upon opening, the ride did not offer the popular FastPass system. Instead, guests were required to get a Rise of the Resistance boarding group through the app.
This completely new system allows you to get a boarding group assignment to avoid the wait times and go right to the ride. Boarding groups are assigned and they are called in order.
While you’ll know what group you are in right after securing a boarding group, you won’t exactly know your ride time until it gets closer. A boarding group assignment doesn’t guarantee entrance, especially if the ride closes at any point or if the flow of riders happens to be slower than expected.
What is the Rise of the Resistance?
You’ll truly have to experience this attraction to understand it. It is a fully immersive story about the battle between the New Order and the Resistance. As you go through the various parts of the attraction, you’ll get to experience a motion simulation vehicle, a walk-through, a trackless ride, and various realistic audio-animatronics.
During the attraction, you’ll be recruited by the Resistance, captured by the New Order, and then rescued. Even if you aren’t a Star Wars fan, you’ll still appreciate the uniqueness and authenticity of this attraction.
Securing a Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group
This system has changed a bit since the grand opening of the ride due to the new precautions. Keep in mind that it can always change in the future.
The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure that you have the My Disney Experience app set up on your smartphone. The app is free, but you’ll want to download it and set up an account if you haven’t already. Make sure you have the latest version if you haven’t used the app in a while.
When you are about to join a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance, be sure that you are already logged in to the app. You’ll also need to have your valid theme park admission tickets loaded into the app and linked to your profile.
Since Disney World reopened in summer 2020, theme park reservations are required to access the parks. In order to request a boarding group, you’ll have to make sure you have a theme park reservation for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Because Disneyland is not currently open, I’m not sure what the process will be there upon reopening.
Park hopping isn’t currently allowed at Walt Disney World. Therefore, you’ll have to be planning to spend the day at Hollywood Studios.
At 7:00 am (Eastern Time), guests are able to go into the app and request their boarding group for Rise of the Resistance. In the past, you had to be in the park to do this. Now, however, guests can be anywhere, as long as they have a valid ticket and theme park reservation.
This makes it so much easier, because you can even do it from your Disney resort hotel. You won’t have to wake up early just to get into the park in time.
At 2:00 pm, another distribution time opens for guests who haven’t yet received a boarding group. At this time, however, you will need to be in Hollywood Studios already. You won’t be able to leave for the afternoon and then try for a boarding group.
Assuming you get a boarding group, then you’ll be given a group number. You can follow along to see what groups are called throughout the day. Once your group is called, you’ll have a one-hour window to report to the cast members at the front of the attraction.

Getting a boarding group is currently the only way that you’ll be able to ride this attraction.
With the recent change, guests are no longer required to be in the park to get a boarding group. However, you will need a park reservation for Hollywood Studios for that day.
Your boarding group will be given a one-hour window that you can return in. So, you can finish up whatever you are doing when your group gets called. Once you arrive at the attraction, you may have a short wait before entering the attraction.
