I bought a pair for myself but only wore them at home!

5 Safety Travel Tips for Solo Female Travelers

5 Safety Travel Tips for Solo : Over two decades, I have explored the remote islands of Rarotonga and Aitutaki, skied an active volcano, dodged epidemics and navigated a low-grade civil war. I fought off muggers in broad daylight in Europe and barely missed being a feast for crocodiles.  Aside from the latter, many safety issues worldwide are the same as those that exist at home. However, when jetlag combines with an unfamiliar setting, a traveler may become easy prey.

Although I have come through my travels unscathed, we women solo travelers need to be realistic about safety. From my repeated sojourns, I have gleaned a list of practical considerations.

Tip One:

  • Pack early.
  • Make a checklist.
  • Check out the weather at your destination and what you need, including any specialty gear.
  • My personal recommendation: When you finish packing, take your luggage for a walk. Then you need to practice hoisting it up into an imaginary overhead bin...

Palm Beach Florida Sunshine Old World Elegance

Palm Beach Florida Sunshine Old World Elegance: If you still have not gone to the beach this year, now is the time.

  • You can save by a trip off season.
  • If you love Europe’s charm but can’t get there now, this is the place.
  • This can work for a range of budgets. (i) Air fares are much less than if you go abroad. (ii) Hotels may be higher than some places but see our thoughts below.

Palm Beach Florida Sunshine Old World Elegance: Why Palm Beach?

Have reports of terrorist attacks and jewel heists left you staying at home? Go to Palm Beach where travel time is short if you are in the US or Canada. It has charm and style and is generally sunny. Prices go way up in the winter and holidays.

5 Tips On Traveling with Cash Debit or Credit Cards

Tips On Traveling with Cash Debit or Credit Cards: Before going abroad, I always ask myself if it is better to take local currency or debit and credit cards.

The popular wisdom is to take your existing debit card. That generally works for purchases/meals and to get local currency from ATM’s once you arrive.  I tend to agree since they are easy to find and widespread. However do be really careful if it is attached to your bank account(s). Unlike a credit card, being hacked on a debit card can cause more trouble.

  • My first encounter with ATM’s abroad was in 2000. I  was on a remote one lane road in northern Scotland in search of the Loch Ness Monster.  Not surprisingly, Nessie did not make an appearance...

Airport Anxiety-Try a K-9 Solution

Airport Anxiety-Try a K-9 Solution. Every traveler has their worst flight stories. My two personal favorites:

The “flight to nowhere”. On a past business trip, I flew one hour to New York, circled for one hour and because of bad weather, flew back one hour to Washington, DC.  In my three hour “trip”, my foot never touched terra firma until I was once more back where I started!

-5 countries in 18 hours. Heading solo to Slovenia to sightsee and ski, on arrival in Zurich, I learned my connection was cancelled. Not to worry, I could be flown to Germany. As I arrived in Germany, I looked longingly as my next flight taxied down the runway, once again without me! No worries I was told, I could be flown to Austria...
