Milos: The Venue

The restaurant space is light and airy with an open feel. White gauze curtains separate the main dining area from the bar and are weighted down with whole heads of garlic. The shades of white throughout the restaurant create a very Mediterranean feel.

Why You Should Follow Your heart (and its wild journey)

Why You Should Follow Your heart. I never realized I felt like a visitor in my own country until recently relocating to Raleigh.

Now that I’m here and experiencing the feelings that I am, I know that was what that unsettled feeling always was. That desire to roam and seek, feeling like I never belonged, or perhaps not even wanted.

Why You Should Follow Your heart

Why You Should Follow Your heart

I thought I just wanted to travel. I though I just enjoyed being free and turning up in places not knowing anyone and not being able to be found.

That definitely comes into play, and it’s because of that, I ended up here in Raleigh. The most random and uncanny choice for a girl addicted to sunshine, gum trees, and beaches.

How to Slip Into Serenity at Chimney Rock & Lake Lure NC

Slip Into Serenity at Chimney Rock

Slip Into Serenity at Chimney Rock

Slip into serenity at chimney rock I feel like my spirit lived in Lake Lure in a previous life.

It’s elevated every time I arrive and see the forested green of the pine trees surrounding the lake.

Lake Lure sits in the Hickory Nut Gorge, surrounded by lush mountain tops and sheer granite cliffs. In the distance are the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Hickory Nut Gorge with names like Buffalo Head and Sleeping lady.

It’s ancient. Timeless. Connected.

It’s not long after arriving that I slip into Lake Time.

It moves slow and rhythmically like the oars on my stand up paddle board moving across the lake.

Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell is the highest point in Austin (775 feet above the lake) and a fantastic spot to get a lovely view of both downtown and the Colorado River. Head there early to beat the heat and the crowds.

Mount Bonnell is Austin’s Number ONE hiking spot. It is an easy climb with the stairs and the view is amazing!!

Don’t let the stairs worry you. There aren’t that many – only 102!! (a flight of stairs is usually 12/13 steps so that is like climbing about 8 stories) Ask the kids to hold on to the rail if you are worried about anyone slipping. If you prefer you can come up the sloping side instead..just turn right at the car park instead of left towards the stairs.

Take a picnic lunch for a breezy spot to pause and soak in the beauty of Austin.

There are several picnic t...

ROAD TRIP!!

Road Trip who remembers road trips? We took road trips when I was a kid. I remember coloring in my coloring books and playing lots of games like ‘I spy’ and being totally and completely bored. I vividly remember, at 5 or 6, being mad at my dad for hitting a bump in the road that made me ‘mess up’ and color outside the lines. I also remember asking him, ” Daddy, PLEASE tell me when you are going to hit a bump so I can not get outside the lines.”

As a parent now, that packs tons of activities and games and music and audio books and DVDs, I just can NOT imagine a road trip without any of those things! I think to myself, “How did my parents survive???” LOL!

Whether you are heading out on a road trip with the kids or without them ...

Crazy laws – Texas

Texans are a proud bunch. I’m a native Houstonian so I certainly fall into the category of a proud Texan, too. Yes, Texas has a crazy laws.

Texans love that things are BIG in Texas. Texans love food! Texans even embrace the strange pieces of the past. Why toss out the old and weird stuff when you can embrace it and laugh??

Crazy laws

Crazy laws – Texas that are still technically on the books

It is illegal to milk another person’s cow. So if you really have a hankering to milk a cow, please ask first.

It is illegal to carry wire cutters in your pocket. Just the idea of cattle rustling ruffles feathers these days and that must be why this law is still on the books. (Austin)

For more than 30 years, Texas has used the campaign, “Don’t Mess with Texas” to educat...
